IT MEANS YOU ATTAINED A CERTAIN STATUS AND THEN BY YOUR OWN DECISIONS WENT BACK TO THE PRIOR STATUS.

OFTEN USED IN RELIGIOUS CONTEXT, LIKE A CHRISTIAN OR MUSLIM WHOM STARTS PARTYING AT STRIP CLUBS.

THIS ALSO CAN BE RELATED TO YOUR CAREER, IF YOU WERE A DELIVERY MAN WHO WAS PROMOTED TO MGR AND THEN SCREWED UP AND WERE DEMOTED. A GOOD EXAMPLE OF THIS IS STEVEN SEGALS MOVIE CAREER, AFTER THE MOVIE UNDER SEIGE.

It means, you were, or are, a christian, and behaved like one, then somewhere along the way, you fall away. Usually, purposefully, or not trying to stay close to God. They slide away from the truth, or God, and often get caught up in something else, that conflicts with that, and the other thing wins out.

It meas sliding back down. After someone makes a decision for Jesus they make changes in their life to reflect Jesus ways. But if after a while the make changes back to the evil ways we call the backsliders.

(Jer 2:19 NIV) Your wickedness will punish you; your backsliding will rebuke you. Consider then and realize how evil and bitter it is for you when you forsake the LORD your God and have no awe of me," declares the Lord, the LORD Almighty.

(Jer 3:22 NIV) "Return, faithless people; I will cure you of backsliding." "Yes, we will come to you, for you are the LORD our God.

(Jer 14:7 NIV) Although our sins testify against us, O LORD, do something for the sake of your name. For our backsliding is great; we have sinned against you.

(Jer 15:6 NIV) You have rejected me," declares the LORD. "You keep on backsliding. So I will lay hands on you and destroy you; I can no longer show compassion.

(Ezek 37:23 NIV) They will no longer defile themselves with their idols and vile images or with any of their offenses, for I will save them from all their sinful backsliding, and I will cleanse them. They will be my people, and I will be their God.
