A toy plastic guitar is easily replaced sweetie. Just go to your local toy store and buy a new one if the old one gets broken.

I work as a Reservations agent for AA, and here is what is says in our guidelines:

"Guitars can exceed the carry-on limit of 45 dimensional inches when it is the customer’s one carry-on item and there is room available to safely stow it in an overhead bin or approved stowage location in the cabin."

Also:
"On all string instruments the passenger should loosen the strings"

Bringing the guitar will not cost extra. You need to make sure you only carry a small handbag in addition to your guitar. And I would also suggest that you call our Reservations Hotline to have a remark put in your booking that you will be carrying a guitar to avoid any hassle at the airport. This is possible without any problems and free of charge.

When I've flown with people who have brought guitars they have had to be checked in, because they were to big. I knew one girl that go her guitar on as her carry on on the way there, but it was taken and checked on the way back because of lack of space on the aircraft. I would call the airline to check, but my guess is they are really strict these days on size requirements so you probably can't.

I always had to check mine, but it is in a hard case, which makes the overall size bigger. Call American and ask, but first take measurements of the guitar so you can tell them the exact size when you call.

Make sure you document the call and get the name of who you talked to in case they say OK on the phone and you run into friction at the airport.

I have seen people take large guitars, large works of art. I think you will be fine. Make sure you have VERY little else in the way of carry-ons, though. No huge purse, for example. If they see you are trying to be efficient with space, they will be helpful.
