The .357 Magnum is a better stopper. It is more versatile in that you can shoot .38s, .357s, and snake shot. The S&W is double-action (the 1911 is single-action on the first shot).
I would keep the .357 and save for the 1911 if I really wanted one.
Happy New Year!

The 1911 is probably the most copied firearm of all time, it must be a great design if so many copy it.On the other hand, a revolver is a perfect defensive firearm simply becuase you can store it loaded for extended periods of time, and pick it up and shoot it 1st try almost 100% of the time, simply put, a semi auto pistol isn't as reliable.
The 1911 is a combat proven pistol, with a known manstopper ammo, the .357mag is also a known manstopper, so like the others have said, BOTH! Keep the magnum, buy a 1911, for a great entry level, no frills 1911, check out Rock island armory 1911's.For less than 400 bucks you get a great shooting, well made pistol, that you can customise just like any other 1911.

the 1911 is the best design pistol ever. If a good time and home defense from people is your main purpose then trade (GUNS CAN BE EXPENSIVE). But if you live in wilderness were big angry bears might want to eat you then keep the .357, a .45 will only piss the bear off more, but also the .357 is to loud and expensive to shoot for fun. The 1911 is super fun for shooting cans and varmit and designed for bad people tring to hurt you, I personally will urge you to get a kimber or springfield 1911.

Keep the 357. Take you time and save up to buy the 1911.
If you sell the 357 you will be sorry down the road and it will cost a lot more to replace it.

It all depends on how much you shoot your Smith and Wesson and what model it is. If I had an N-frame model 27 (or even a 28 ) I would keep it for its curio/collector value even if I no lomger shot it. If it is a k-frame .357 (models 13/19/65/66) and you are tired of it, sell it off. Don't worry about it. They made so many of those (just like the model 10) that actual worth is not what people think it is. If your gun was given to you by family...KEEP IT.

If you can't keep both, then trade for a 1911 Series 70, the Series 80 is not as nice a weapon as the 70s are.

If it is a true Colt brand 1911, then it doesn't matter what the other gun is go with the 1911, it will be well worth it.

The real question is why not have both? The S&W is a great fire arm by itself. The Colt on the other hand is almost antique.
As for trading, if you do be sure you get a fair trade value for yours. If one gun is worth $50 and the other is worth $500, then someone is getting a deal and the other one is getting ripped off.

Get both of them, put them in the closet, and then go buy a Glock MDL. 20, 10mm, 21 .45 cal. or 30 .45 cal. It won't kick like either one of them and your hand will be grateful that you did it!
