Bearshare is an older network (Gnutlla if I remember correctly) that is as infested with malware as the FastTrack network (Kazaa). All P2P networks suffer from this problem to some extent. Your Best bets are:
1. Bittorrent This is a massive network with everything that Bearshare has but with better choices. Software, applications, movies, music....you name it. It's also the easiest. As a client I recommend UTorrent. Free, easy, very stable and light on resources-unlike Bearshare! There are plenty of sites for downloading the torrent files like Torrentbox and Torrentspy. Dessent.net is the best FAQ on the net.
2. NewsGroups- The oldest filesharing system on the net. Your ISP should allow you free access to them. Check their website for details. Endless possibilities. It takes a little more patience to use and the variety depends on whats posted and how long the server(s) they are on will have them (called retention). Newsleecher is a great peace of software but your e-mail client (outlook or Thunderbird for example) can do it though I recommend using Google for a free newsgroup reader like Forte's Agent.
3. IRC Internet Relay Chat. Fairly technical to use and can be a major headache but over all but has a great selection. mIRC is a great little client to try.
All networks are infested. Scan ALL files with your anti-virus before opening to be safe. Check the 'sources' box for links for the software and user info.

Limewire PRO or Ares. On LimeWire you can't trust programs so never download a program for LimeWire. I have never downloaded an infected file on Ares. It is a little slow and downloads can take a while but it is worth the wait. There is a sections for chatting with users to find stuff you need and users put comments on the files so you know it is really what you are looking for and that it isn't crap.

First, if you're attempting to DL a document illegally, there is consistently the possibilty you receives an endemic, for this reason there is no such application to do it one hundred% secure. the really way you receives it loose is by risking it. Your perfect wager is records shared by many sources. Like in Limewire, if there are one hundred human beings you're able to DL from you're in all likelihood secure. you may inspite of the fact which have your computer run an endemic test good when you acquire it.
