I just read a story (in my local newspaper) where the standard Fire Investigators' handbook was written based upon decades of observations by professionals. This handbook was taught to all fire investigators; the information was thought to be 100% true because it was based on decades of real experience and observation. And this was used to convict people of arson. However, the information was never subjected to scientific scrutiny. When it was, the information was shown to be FALSE, despite what people believed. Now, the book has been rewritten but some places still refuse to reconsider arson cases because they're stubbornly tied to their old beliefs.
Shouldn't all of our beliefs be held up to scrutiny?
