just one year, then that's it. Girls and guys. I think it would open up a lot of people's eyes.
.....this is my solution to the draft (if there were to ever be one) that way you don't have to serve 4 years (or however long it is) and only some people go.

I know it's only a concept because it could never happen, there would be too much money wasted training people and then they'd only be in for a year and not many would stay in after....money wise it doesn't make sense. But as a concept...what do you think?
I think we need people to learn about this first hand. I know the anti-military and such people will say no.

kowalchuk- what? obviously not where you do, because I live in a FREE country (you might have heard of it, the USA?) and I have volunteered to join the military...where do YOU live?

firefly- I KNOW it can't happen, it's just a concept idea. because the US is "thinking" about a draft....forgive my ignorance about other countries

shortcut2- it's a REALITY that not every can be a soldier, but that's why we have other branches, and not everyone goes overseas....you could get a desk job or what not.

Good idea. I would like to see all these spoiled brats coming out of high school have to go through boot camp in any branch. That would be funny.

Will this solve anything is the question? As a debater curently researching similar armed forces populus topics, I say no. As of last month all branches had officially met their yearly quotas for signups and new recruits. Implementing your plan will cause a back up in our military system to where there is not enough barracks and supplies to train all those students. I am not antimilitary, im anti iraqi war, but i beleive our military system is an effective force that protects us in times of need. With some tweaking of your plan you might be able to come up with something resonable, such as a longer commitment and a different way to pick the recruits and increas attendance. Maybe a sign up bonus?

I for one AGREE!..with all the schools getting soft and having metal detectors and guns and violence yet they B!tcha and complain about the military and what its doing? hell I think they SHOULD! BEEN THERE DONE THAT..I did my time and I am still doing my time..in fact all these smart paper-pushers and all their degrees who can't solve didly squat with anything in the USA so what if the numbers are reaching their quotas? You rather send your kids to schools where they are not even educated properly, hell the school system is a joke when half the ediots who graduate can't even read..yet they are THUGS and carry guns and shoot each other, join gang-banging BS..hell f@ck in high school or elementary for that matter..do some kind of drugs or are involved in some kind of criminal activity..ohh but wait where are all these PAPER-PUSHERS!..ohh yeah..out cussing the GOVT and blaiming everyone but their own undesciplined butts!..Butt of course the rich kids whith proper educations in the top schools graduate to become PAPERPUSHERS!!..Now if u mention the hand-full maybe even less of the low class 25% who fought all odds to graduate with honors well HELLOOOO what about the 75% that didn't? The Ones who are filling up your jails and raising crimes left and right?..I AGREE and maybe its a military way of thinking but it is spreading everywhere..They should implement a draft or some form of it to put some respect into the young minds of today..they don't respect their parents..they call child protective services when they get spanked..they don't respect their teachers or mentors when they go to schools with weapons and drugs..they don't respect religion or anything that relates to their spiritual side when they cuss out God and everything holy...they don't respect their goverment when all they see is trash media everyday..they don't respect the law enforcement when it is encouraged to fight back in songs, movies, and other BS actions that YOU PAPERPUSHERS are showing when you keep trying to prove the Leaders wrong or catch them in some insane criminal act..Our leaders may be corrupt but it is YOU who PUT them there!..Anti- military/war my @ss.. Unless you have done your time and you know what is it like to be in the scope of the enemy's gun with your life on the balance..you will never know the proud feeling of when you see those stars and stripes on the flag..you think any kid of today gives a r@tz @ss about that?..hell they sport mexican, puerto-rican, dominican, pakistan, all other -AN nations flags and yet when the USA flag is being raised or being pulled down they don't give a-sh!t..I AGREE I AGREE I AGREE I AGREE!!!!!!! All kids who think they are bad @ss to be gang banging and drug dealing should do time in Hell! and just because we have done it and wouldn't wish it for another human being SOME kids/adults need to be reminded that LIFE is too precious a gift and the DRAFT or some form of it will make them wake up cause spanking, and calling the police aint working NO MORE!

In Israel they have universal conscription. It is because they have to. They are closely surrounded by enemies.

When we had a draft, the minimum time of service was two years. It didn't work. Now we have an all volunteer army. It works. We don't have to chase draft dodgers in Mexico or Canada any more.

I spent three years in the Army. People these days would not learn how to put on a uniform in one year's time. Yours is a bad idea.

adulthood would not count number in this challenge the position the regulation is worried. Your mothers and fathers are nevertheless responsible for you till you're 18 and which potential in case you get into worry then they could bypass to penitentiary, lose their abode or get larger vehicle insurance prices, etc. do not damage your mothers and fathers considering they have given a lot to you. instead stay interior the regulation because you're literally not of age yet. My mothers and fathers used to assert that till I make my own money and pay them lease then I seriously is not having any of those privileges that you communicate about, yet to do not ignore that there are nevertheless abode guidelines as long as i change into residing lower than their roof. what's so interesting or appropriate about staying out late (ingesting, partying or sex is often the excuse to be out after nighttime, none of that are strong for you and your occupation) and coming abode ill and in no way feeling nicely sufficient to do what you want to do good right here morning? you want to bypass in along with your bf? Huh? you want sex and a toddler, you want an std? you're meant to be utilizing your time properly to study so that you may have a strong occupation, help yoursef, later help the baby your bf received't pay for. C'mon now, get actual. you want some adulthood.

You're wrong that it could never happen! This is how things are run in Sweden, only it's only males who are "conscripted" out of high shcool. I think it's an excellent suggestion for a number of reasons:
1) EVERY officer starts out as an enlisted person, and is therefore sensitive to enlisted people's issues.
2) EVERY male understands the obligations of public service
3) EVERY mother who votes knows that the people she elects may send her children to war if she makes a bad decision!

I think its kind of a ridiculous idea. I'm not anti-military but lets face it. Even people who sign up for the military knowing there is a war going on dont want to go to iraq. why send those who DONT want to join and receive the military benefits? i think making them all go thru basic training would teach them some respect for what military go thru, but thats not very realistic either. Another question.. if one of them get hurt over there would you propose they get military disabled veteran accomadotions for the rest of their life or no? Theres too much to this idea to make it work but it is an interesting point you have.

One year isn't adequate. Universal service has its positives, but it would be frightfully expensive, and wouldn't help the professional services a bit. A separate force of trained militia wouldn't be a bad idea, though.

I've always thought a year or two of public service after high school would be a good idea, it doesn't have to be military,,,

I was thinking that would be a good idea.Thats what they do in Singapore but thats simply because they don't have a large populous. If they did that in the U.S then there would be way to many service people.
