There is considerable debate about whether a non Maori person should get a Maori tattoo design or not.

Many Maori elders will be offended at the sight of a white person with a Maori tattoo while other Maori's will accept it.

I am from Ireland and live in Australia. I have met a lot of tattoo artists from around the world. A lot of them are in agreement on one fact and that is that all (tattoo) art and symbolism comes from a common source - a collective humanity if you like.

I don't necessarily see a problem with non Irish people getting Irish or Celtic tattoos. Pat Fish from http://www.luckyfish.com is agreement on this this as well.

We are all one family. As long as you respect and acknowledge other peoples tribal and familial ties you shouldn't cause offense. Traditional ta moko tattoos have deep significance and history. At least give them their due respect.

are you maori? I'd only suggest getting it done if you are.

its to the point that people think that they are trendy, and others look down on the people who get them..

I'm not telling you not to get it, I'm just warning you thats what I've heard.
