Next to the the gay question I guess this is the most asked question.
In the 50's Charlie Scott drove races for owner Carl Kiekhaefer
In the 60's and 70's Wendell Scott drove in 495 races including 1 win 20 top 10 finishes.
The 80's Willie T.Ribbs drove 3 races .
Presently Bill Lester made a couple of cup starts as well as driving in the Craftsman truck series.
Currently there are several black drivers in some of the team diversity plan or training or what ever you want to call it.

Well the quick answer is there is, his name is Bill Lestor. He moved to NASCAR a while back and is driving for Bill Davis Racing in the Craftsman Truck Series full time with designated rides in the Busch and Cup series.

You really do need to pay closer attention to when you ask this type of question. For one there are many different series in NASCAR, you have the Wheelin Engineering Weekly series (formally the Dodge Weekly Series) that compete at your local NASCAR sanctioned tracks for regional and national points, There is the NASCAR Grand National West Series, and the Busch Grand National East/North Series. In those series there are several drivers of color. All of these drivers are competing for the rides in the upper level of NASCAR (Craftsman Truck Series, Busch Grand National Series, and the Nextel Cup Series) There is an estimated 42 teams (trucks) that will attempt to race through out the season with only 36 starting positions the other two series has 43 starting positions and an estimated 54 and 62 teams respectfully. That is a Total of 158 teams (cars) that thousands of drivers aspire to get to.

Bill Lester has been the only black driver in a while because most African Americans do not enjoy racing cars around in circles for hours. He will get a few races in the Nextel Cup but he will probably never get a full time ride in the Nextel Cup because there are not enough African Americans watching NASCAR.

Bill Lester drove the Waste Management car last year, and he's black. And there have been other black drivers in NASCAR.

why do they have to be black? if there were only whites that race which i know that there are a few black NASCAR drivers in the cups why do we have to put a black in every thing? ok ok lets make every basketball team from high school to pros have at least 2 white players on the court at all times why cant we ask that? if blacks were not interested in NASCAR there wouldn't be any like the the interest in basketball for whites has diminished. its like we have to make sure every sport every job has a black or some other race or nationality in it for it to be equal oh what is next lets find some Black guys and Hispanics to go play hockey?

Racecar driver Bill Lester recently made his Cup race debut as the first Black driver to qualify and compete in a race in the National Association for Stock Car Auto Racing (NACSAR's) top stock car series in nearly 20 years. Lester, a 45-year-old regular in

NASCAR's Craftsman Truck Series since 2002, finished 38th out of a 43-car field at the Golden Corral 500 at Atlanta Motor Speedway. In his No. 23 Dodge Charger, he qualified at 190.502 mph in the Nextel Cup series earning a 19th place starting spot for the Golden Corral 500.

The last Black person to qualify for a race in NASCAR's top series was driver Willy T. Ribbs in 1986.

Lester's participation in this race is significant not only because of the historical value, but it also brings awareness to the sport of racecar driving to minorities.

Bryan Emrich, director of Brand Management for Valvoline motor oil, associate sponsor to Lester's racecar, said that the company is extremely excited to partner with Lester and "to have an opportunity to be part of this effort to further the diversity of our sport."

The "Diversity in Racing" program has been implemented for the last couple of years. While there aren't any team members of color going over the wall during pit stops, you can usually see them in the back ground. They're the ones pushing the car after it drops out of the race or sweeping up the pit stall. Perhaps NASCAR is ready for diversity, but the teams don't seem to be.

There have been a couple, Namely Willie T. Ribbs, but NASCAR has a diversity program that is doing well, and hopefully we will see some of the young prospects in the future before Toyota starts bringing in foreiners.
