I buy the scented littler and add baking soda too it. Works like a charm. don't forget to scoop several times a day and of course depose of waste. Clunking litter is best but not good to flush away as can clog toilets.

This is what I do and it works quite well. I use plain ol' cheap clay litter and I add regular ol' baking soda to it...just sprinkle a good bit of the soda over the litter and kind of stir it around with the scoop a bit until the white disappears into the litter.

Change the litter at least once a week, or more often depending on the number of cats and/or how much the cat uses it. We have 2 cats and 2 litter boxes, a large box and a regular sized box. The large box, I fill at least half full with the litter before I add the soda.

In the past, we used less litter and emptied it daily. At that time, we did not use soda, either.

Some cats don't like scented litter or those deoderizer powders. And cats can be picky about the type of litter also. I have never had a cat turn his nose up the the clay litter over the years and numbers of cats.

I use the kind of litter that looks like clear and blue crystals. The crystals absorb liquid and odor and one bag will keep a cat happy for 4 or 5 weeks IF you scoop the poop at least once a day.
This kind doesn't put any scent in the air but it does eliminate odor pretty well. You want to be careful about deoderizers, by the way. Some cats HATE them and won't go near the box. Then you have an even worse problem. LOL

Try using "scoop away" scoopable cat litter, either with crystals or without. It's about $10 at Wal-Mart, and I think it works the best for odor control. Also if you scoop everyday and take the waste out to your garage or porch, that will also help to control the smell.

In addition, you can also get some deodorizers for your cat box area. I have a citrus odor absorber that I found in the cat box aisle at the store, and it works pretty good. It helps take away the odors before they reach the rest of the house. They also sell kitty litter deodorizers that you can add right into the litter which help keep things fresh.

Good Luck!

I have two cats. Be sure you are using a catfood that is designed for your cat's specific needs. Dry foods are not as stinky to digest as wet foods. Many cat foods are formulated toward urinary health and indoor cats!

Also use a top of the line litter. I like Fresh Scoop, comes in a big bucket with a purple label and is very good at controlling odor (even with multiple cats). We change the litter 3 times each week, so we use a bucket each week. For one cat you may not need to change it but once or twice.

I also recommend a covered cat box! You can actually make a cover yourself using a cardboard box that fits over the cat box; just cut a door in one end of it. That way the cat can get in and out but the stink stays in the box.

Well, of course, you need to clean the box out often depending on how many cats and how many litter boxes you have. Buy the "good" stuff...it has better odor control and even though you use the clumping litter, totally empty the whole box and scrub it down once a month...or you could do what my daughter does and just buy disposable litter boxes, but that doesn't seem ecologically smart to me. Also, you could sprinkle a little baking soda onto the litter. That controls odors also.

Extra Strength Ever Clean is about the only thing that works for my 20 lb beastie. Use a deep box, make a lid or buy a box with a lid. You need to scoop it out at least every second day. Ever Clean clumps so it's easy. I add a cup or two of fresh every day or two. Lining the box with a big garbage bag helps because when I've run out of fresh litter it's time to empty the whole thing, scrub out the box, and add half a box of fresh litter.
In summer the cat box goes outside on the protected balcony; in winter in the corner of the bathroom. Leave a few small bowls of water out for your kitty throughout the home, rather than one big one by the food bowl. He or she will like hunting. Probably their only exercise!
Also, canned food feces is way stinkier than dried food feces. I find that cheap cat food makes a stinkier poop.

As with humans: garbage in,garbage out...

Fresh Step & Feline Pine are the best litters I have used & both are good with odor control. My cat doesn't like the Feline Pine so I use Fresh Step clumping litter. Sometimes I'll buy a cheaper one but I always regret it & switch back. Scoop the box @ least every day--that'll help. Also Fresh Step has charcoal in it & that helps w/ the odor.

I have tried every kind of litter due to my cat having urinary tract infections a lot. I always use Feline Pine now, it has a natural pine scent, not that horrible perfumey smell they put on clay litter. I use a liner that gets thrown away every week with the litter and I use a covered litter box.

I use Tidy Cat scoopable litter for multiple cats and scoop it several times a day. It's one of the best kinds of litter for deodorizing those odours.

And I've tried just about every litter there is.
