My cat is now 14 and she's scratched the sides of her litter box all her life. I don't think they even mean to do it, it just happens cuz it's dark in there. We've had to get one with a hood because if we didn't, there would be litter on everything in our bathroom. If you have problems with your cat getting litter everywhere, try one of those special mats that catch the litter in the grooves in it. It shouldn't really matter though that it's scratching the inside though.

This is probably not something you can stop. Unless they're really tearing up the litter box, let them scratch. It's a way that cats mark their territory. They have natural instincts to do this and are not likely to stop. It's more common in males but females can also do it. Spaying or neutering your cat might help but my male cats are neutered and still do that. Also be careful because some cats don't like hooded litter boxes (think how you feel about "porta-potty's" then picture it with no room to move around and your head touching the top). If they're using it, great, but observe to make sure they are using the box.

Some cats are odd that way I have three and one of them is like that.
He just doesn't want to touch the litter with his front paws so scratches everywhere else
(it doesn't matter about hooded or not he did the same with an open box) and he keeps pulling stuff inside to cover his messes

You can't stop them from doing that. It's a natural instinct that helps them get all the litter off of their paws. Next time, try putting litter liners in your cats box and newspaper under and around your cats box so the litter don't get on the floor.

My male cat likes to scratch the box as well. I have found using two liners really help, especially if he really tears up the top liner. I have a backup that I can use to change to box without the liner tearing and spilling "stuff" all over the place.

My kittens try this besides and it somewhat is as a results of fact they're attempting to get the muddle off their paws. once I had a muddle field dome with the stair get admission to the stairs could knock all of it off and that they never did that. so because it somewhat is my basically guess! Wow, you will desire to bypass by lots of muddle. i regulate mine out as quickly as a week yet sparkling it a pair cases an afternoon. What you may get are those little foamy mats that little young little ones have and positioned those on the way so she's scratching that extremely of your wall.

I don't think you can stop them from doing that. I think my little girl cat does that. I'm just very glad they are always using it and let them scratch away!
