Why do people wear rubber bands around their wrists to prevent cutting?

They wear the rubberbands around their wrist so that they can snap that rubberband whenever they feel the urge to cut. That way they are still inflicting pain, but without having to resort to cutting. This is a method that people that resort to self-injury (SI) are told is healthier to use, if they really feel that they must inflict injury upon theirself.

I have personal experience with helping many overcome SI, and really, the rubberband trick can be efficient if the person truly wants help and wants to stop cutting.

I've heard of people who use this as a way to quit smoking. Every time they start to light up, or feel the urge they pop the rubber band and they remind themselves that they really want to quit. This may be a similar therapy for cutting.

They do?
As far as I knew, the bands/bangles/sweatbands/whatevers were there to hide the scars or open wounds from anyone that may otherwise get a peek.

I had a friend that cuts and she told me she uses that to hurt herself without cutting..she gets it very tight and it causes physical pain but does not cut the skin..I think it was something like it!!

Interesting, I am looking forward to the serious answers, as I never knew this was happening. Might be a physiological thing.

I don't think it's to prevent... rather to hide.
