You cannot get sick from the cold - you get sick from germs. Many people think you get sick from the cold because you are more likely to get sick in the winter; however, this is mostly because you DON'T have the windows open and the germs are contained. This happens most if you go to school or work in an environment where there are a lot of people coming in and out all day sharing supplies, etc.
Make sure you wash your hands, especially if you are handling money or anything you know a sick person has touched. However, keeping your windows open might HELP you from getting sick because fresh air can circulate and the germs won't get trapped in your room.

I must disagree with your mother. I believe the fresh air is very healthy versus the stale recycled air coming from either your air conditioner or heater.
In the middle of winter (which is below freezing where I live), I sleep with the windows open and the ceiling fan turning. I love it and I have never gotten sick from it.
I don't know how old you are but remember to respect your Mom and if you live with her....you must live by her rules....;)

Nothing bad happens when you sleep with the window open unless you have allergies. If you do I wouldn't suggest sleeping with the window open. If you don't go ahead. One way to stop getting sick from sleeping with the window open is to change your sheets more often.

cool air wont make you sick, it might cause problems if you have asthema, but it takes a germ to get you sick, and you are more likely to get a germ in an enclosed room with poor ventilation. I work out in the open air most of the time and almost never take sick, unless I'm enclosed with someone else who has a cold already.

Depending on the weather, you could get sick, but if you live in a the city...you could get raped. That's easy access to you in your own home, a place where you should be safe. The world isn't as sane as it used to be. I think that you should listen to your mom. After all, she is your mom, she should know better than you. My mom always said that "A hard head makes a soft behind!"

It's an old wives tale. Fresh air is good for you - it is better than the air conditioner or heater for sure. My Mom always said the same thing. It does need to be a comfortable temp for you, though. Just be sure it is secured. Don't want any unwanted intruders - human or animal, ya know?

no. absolutely not. its an old wives tale that the cold or being outside at night while wet....;like just out of the shower...will cause you to be sick. it wont!! the cold, moist night air could speed up you getting sick, but you have to already have the bacteria in your body, and would prob get sick anyway, just not as fast.
