Three men were on a business trip. In order to save money, they decided to share a hotel room and split the bill. They arrive at the hotel desk and were charged $30 for 1 night. They all gave $10 dollars which equaled to $30. They went up to their rooms to rest. The front desk clerk realized his mistake and called the bellhop and asked him to return $5 dollars to the men because he overcharged them by $5 dollars. The room was only $25 dollars. On his way up in the elevator, the bellhop thought to himself, how am I going to split $5 dollars with 3 men? He decided he would keep $2 dollars (as a tip) and return the other $3 dollars. He go up to their room and knocked on the door. When the men came out he handed each one a $1 dollar bill, and explained to them that they had been overcharged. Therefore the men each paid $9 dollars. If you multiply $9 dollars X 3 men it would equal to $27 dollars plus the $2 dollars the bellhop kept would equal $29 dollars. Where did the last $1 go?

The three men did not each pay nine dollars.
$3 the men received plus $2 the bellhop kept = $5 + $25 the front desk kept = a total of 30$
9 x 3 = 27 that's two dollars too much.
So the men did not pay equally since the bellhop took $2.

This is a classic brain teaser that has appeared so many times in books. Here's the answer:
It didn't go anywhere. The hotel has $27 ($9x 3men), and the men have $3 ($5 refund - $2 belllhop). $27 +$3=$30.
BUT...
The $2 the bellhop took is included in the $27 the men paid. You can't add $27+$2. It's like adding 4lb + 3kg. It doesn't make sense.
BUT-BUT...
$27 just HAPPENS to be $25 (the actual price) + $2 (the money the bellhop took).
I hope this helps. I know it's a little confusing, but this is how I learned it.

Follow this, the men were supposed to pay $8.33 each (since the price was $25) returning the $1 to each would make the total $28 [($8.33 + $1) x3]. then the remaining $2 tip would go to the scheming bellhop which would bring the grand total to $30.

$25 paid for room + $2 as a tip makes $27, + $3 back in the men's pockets, makes $30.

At the end, you're counting the money like this:
($25 paid for room) + ($2 as a tip) makes $27, + $2 as a tip makes 29.
You're counting the $2 twice and not counting the $3 they got back at all. It should be:
($25 paid for room) + ($2 as a tip) makes $27, + $3 back in he men's pockets, makes $30.
And yes, I am proud of myself for that. :)

you are adding when you should be subtracting. $27 paid by the men - $2 kept by the bell hop equals $25, the amount at the front desk.
