We're going through 35lbs of food a week with 3 large dogs, and weekly trips to buy food are getting ridiculous. Does anybody order their food in bulk, and if so is it possible to receive some kind of discount through certain companies?

Petco offers a large discount (just above their cost) for people that buy more than 200lbs at a time, plus they offer a buy 10 get one free program with your Pals card. Plus you could try to get the 200lbs when the brand that you want is on sale so you would save even more. You would just have to go speak with the manager there.

Also, my local Sam's carries 44lbs bags of Purina ONE Lamb and Rice for less than $28 a bag, you could just buy multiple bags. They carry other brands too.

I posted this to another answer, so my appologies to anyone who has already read it, but it applies here too. Only wanted to add, that there are good foods in every price range, just know what to look for, and what to stay clear of... ------------- The best kind of food is the kind that the dog does well on. You'll get people telling you that food 'x' is best, or that you have to avoid x,y,z at all costs. The fact of the matter is, the dog is the ultimate judge of the product. The first thing that I look at when I'm looking for a new food is the price. I ask myself "If I were buying human food for this price, what kind of food would I be getting". If you're buying the cheapest food on the grocery shelf, then the chances are, you're getting sawdust (i.e. poorly digestible, low quality, etc, etc). That's not to say that you can't find expensive food that is also poor quality, but at least then you know the manufacturers had a little more to work with. Next thing to look for is the AAFCO feeding trial label on the bag. Did it go through an actual feeding trial? Or was it simply formulated to meet AAFCO standards? (If formulated, then they can sell it without ever having fed it to an actual dog). Again, not a perfect system, but it does say something about the company's commitment to quality if they do feeding trials. (Feeding trials aren't perfect, but they are a start). You'll get people telling you that you need a 'grain free', 'by-product free' food. By-products aren't *necessarily* bad (in fact some of the best meat can be from by-products... your dog doesn't require, or desire all muscle meat). That being said 'by-products' covers a wide range of food sources, some by-products, I wouldn't want to feed my dog. Grains can be an excellent, and cost effective nutritional source. That being said, some dogs (like some people) have a problem with some grains. What it essentially boils down to is, try a food that seems to be of a reasonable quality, and in your price range. Feed it for at least a month, and at the end of the month evaluate how the dog is doing (skin, coat, weight, energy level, etc). Are you satisfied with the results? If so, continue, if not, try a different food. There is no magic formula, or magic ingredient that will be the best for all dogs.

A good place to go would be Sam's Club. They have dog food there, and lots of other stuff, in bulk at a better price than most places. They are also all over the place, but you need a membership to shop there. If you already have a membership, great. Otherwise, it's a good idea to have one because you can buy just about anything there cheap and in bulk.

I order my dog food from my local feed store by the "skid". There are 20 bags per skid and they give me a discount, plus I use the "breeder bucks" from the company. It adds up to a great savings. We use 40 pounds per week with 5 Newfies (currently).
