It seems to me that preaching is a waste of time. A blasphemer cannot be saved. That sin is unforgivable, and denying the Holy Ghost is one way to blaspheme.
So, if someone is not a Christian, then there are two reasons:
1. He has denied Christ and the Holy Ghost.
2. He is unaware of Christ and the Holy Ghost.
If the former, then you are wasting your breath. No matter what you do, that blasphemer is going to Hell. As soon as someone says, "I don't believe in God," he cannot be saved. A preacher would be more effective helping the poor and starved.
If the latter, then you take a big risk with that person's soul. He has not blasphemed against the Holy Ghost. But if you teach him about Christ, he has the opportunity to. Many believe that God does not punish those who are truly innocent (such as children). An ignorant person stands a good chance at Heaven until you preach to him and give him the opportunity to blaspheme.
So, what benefit lies in preaching?

From Mark 3:29:
But he that shall blaspheme against the Holy Ghost hath never forgiveness, but is in danger of eternal damnation.

Jan K: I see your point, and I consider it admirable. But, the Bible is pretty clear that once you deny God, you cannot be saved. Ever.
So, giving God a chance is a valid option for those who have never heard of God. If you've ever been an atheist or a Muslim or a pagan, then that door is shut to you. You are unsaved forever, even if you do believe in God later in life.

Araknid asks, "Do you think they'll shut up now?"
If only. I only wish that those street preachers who waste hours upon hours with empty preaching would go help with a soup kitchen or collect donations for orphans. It seems that preaching is a comfortable empty gesture that makes the preacher feel good about himself, even if he doesn't really make an impact on the world.

Floridagatorgirl: It does sound pretty crazy, but there are some Christians who consider the Bible to be the truth. I can see why you'd call the Bible crazy, and I respect your opinion.
Luke 1:77 stresses salvation through the forgiveness of sins. If a sin cannot be forgiven, then there is no salvation.
You may speak out against the Bible, but there are some Christians who consider it true, so your words may fall on deaf ears.
