My car wouldn't start. It sure tried hard. I finally got it started. But, then it pinged badly when I was driving it. It has had a slight ping for the past three weeks or so. I thought it just needed an oil change, so I got it one.

Does it have a timing chain? If the chain needs adjustment would this cause it to ping?

Could bad gas cause a pinging? Would a fuel cleaner help?

Help, please! :(

It usually stops pinging once it's heated. It did that today, too. By the time the engine had heated up sufficiently, the pinging had stopped. I didn't go very far. When I got back home, I tried to start it again and it started right up.

Thank you both very much! My engine light is not coming on. I'll try the suggestions you've made and update with how it goes.

Well, I started with the engine cleaner and better gas. I haven't had to fill it up again yet (great gas mileage), so I haven't put in the stuff that takes the water out. It was a little better for a couple days after that, but this morning the pinging was really bad. I think I need to have it serviced. Thanks for all the answers. I'll choose one best answer and then give thumbs up for the other guys on some of your other best answers to give you some points, too. Thanks again!!!!!!!!!

try 89 octane gas from a different gas station, you could have bad gas. also add some good quality fuel injection cleaner in before you fill up the gas tank, it could be as simple as that. yes your car has a timing belt and timing could be an issue but try the gas 1st, then look at your spark plugs next. your plugs should be ok but may need to be replaced if you have been using bad gas.

If this sound is from the engine you should have a check engine lite on, do you ?? Pinging is from bad fuel, If you live in a cold damp climate, you might try a water removind additive in the tank. It goes away when engine warms so this is what I would suspect. I wouldn't suspect low octane fuel as if that were the cause it would ping under load and not as you have explained it. I would also buy my gas at another station This moisture may come from their storage tanks. If you get any more moisture your engine will quit.

like the other guys said, try a higher octane fuel, you probally got some bad gas, try a different brand. also, try a fuel additive, especially if your in a cold climate.
