Dionne,
You probably could make it. Having no children and watching my friends who do, I am convinced that a mom can do anything! I'm truly awed and amazed at a mothers' dedication - especially the single ones.

I think the one question you need to ask yourself is if you're doing this because you WANT to or because you're trying to please two people who are no longer here to give you approval. Bear with me for a minute...

When my mother died I watched the hospice people come in and they worked SO well with her. When she died, I decided after a period of time that I wanted to do hospice work. They would not let me even think about it for at least a year. The advice was listened to and was, in the end, a good choice. This past year I lost my youngest sibling to suicide and my first instinct was to jump right in and help other survivors of suicide. I remembered the old hospice advice and have held back and again, it was sound advice.

I find it interesting that my profession (aesthetics) is a healthful, helpful and healing one. When I get those feelings of needing to "save" someone I delve deeper into work and try to make adjustments there that help my clients and make people feel better through that avenue. I have come to realize that through doing that I am helping others without the constant daily reminder of events that were excrutiatingly painful in my own life.

I have a BS in Psychology with quite a bit of graduate work under my belt and, when I was very young, worked as a therapist at a local hospital. It's difficult work with high ricidivism rates and I was discouraged quickly. I found it extremely difficult to leave these individuals I counseled at work when 5 p.m. rolled around and go home, be happy and live in an entirely different world. It wore on me. But then, I had zero personal knowledge of substance abuse and all it entailed and didn't know how to protect myself emotionally. You know the ins and outs of substance abuse and that can help and hurt you if you don't stay on top of it.

Just make sure you're doing it for you. I applaud your goals - especially with two small children to care for. Good luck to you! I wish I could hear the end of your story. I'd like to know what you decide to do. :)

Going to college is difficult and expensive but I applaud your wanting to. My daughter recently finished her Masters degree at an on-line university so I'm sure you could find an accredited one on-line teaching the subjects you would need to become a drugs counselor. It would be less expensive and you would be studying in your home, at your computer, at your pace and wouldn't have to worry about emergencies or being on time to pick up your two children from school. Just enter "on-line universities" in your search engine for a start

I think everyone will be proud of you wanting to help others and that the experience you had within your family has motivated you to reach out for the good of the human family.
