It actually dosen't have a taste, but it's really fun to eat. It just feels wierd going down. Order some from Jell-O's website and try it. It's really easy to make and is mostly sugar and water.

I lived in England for a year, and this question came up frequently. The main complaint they had was the "peanut butter and jelly sandwich". Jello is what most of the English call jelly. In America we call jam without seeds jelly. So a peanut butter and jelly sandwich is really a peanut butter and jam sandwich. Jello is actually a brand name for gelatin.
What you saw on the movie was Jello gelatin cooled in a mold. Many people add Cool Whip (a brand name for a type of whipped cream) to the mixture, which is why it isn't transparent.
As for taste, it is usually sweetened with sugar and a flavoring (like lime). I do enjoy having it every once in a while.
I hope this helps.

I have a memory of a Sunday paper thing where they showed us gigantic piles of bones waiting for delivery to England so they could be boiled up and the extract made into jelly. The big scare was
1/ The bones stood uncovered for ages in the near tropical heat
2/ Flies scavenged bits of meat from the bones.
3/ There was a probability of human bones being mixed in with the animal bones. (I still like jelly and always have a basin full sitting in the fridge so I can eat a spoonful when I wake at night)
I may be wrong as I'm relying on a young boys memory but I think it was the Sunday Pictorial who printed the story, anyway, the Sunday Pic was my fathers choice of a Sunday paper.

Jell-o is a trademarked and patented product, a gelatin desert.
The first patent for a gelatin dessert mix sold in boxes was obtained in 1845 by a man named Peter Cooper from New York City, the first recorded patent on a gelatin dessert. It was 22 years before anyone concieved of making fruit-flavored gelatin. This fell to another New Yorker, Pearle B. Waite. He and his wife named the product Jell-o. Through a series of sales and mergers, the Jello-brand eventually ended up in the Kraft Foods Corporation (Illinois, USA), which is one of the largest international food/beverage companies.
Jello comes in both sugar and sugar-free varieties (sugar-free since 1923). Even the sugared version is pretty low-cal (80 calories / serving). Jello is used as a dessert, salad ingredient, cooking aid, and even a party favor. It is quite tasty, and children are particularly fond of it. It is also recommended to people with weak digestion. There are innumberable recipes in American tradition with Jello.
Check out more on the Kraft Foods website about Jello uses and history.

Jello is made out of gelatin. Gelatin is a product that you get when you boil animal skins and bones down. It's kinda jiggly and best served cold. It comes in lots of different flavors like cherry, lime and grape. It doesn't taste too bad...just as long as you don't think of where it came from.
And what's best about it is that you can shape it into different molds. You can even mix it with liquor and make jello shots. It's very 80's and is a very versatile food product. Just don't think about the skin, bones and cartilidge that it came from, and you'll be fine.

There are a lot of ways to prepare Jello and it comes in many flavors. Jello is gelatin that has a fruit flavor. It is quite good. You can add different things to it to enhance and change it. Fruits, whipped cream, and other things can be added to it. You can believe it or don't, it is very good. Sometimes things that aren't very good to look at are quite good indeed. It use to be made from bones and things but now it is made from a seaweed extract. Never judge a book by its cover.

It is not jelly, that is something totally different made with fruit or preserves. It comes as a powder and you mix it with hot water, then put it in cups or a mold and place it in the refrigerator and let it cool for a few hours, when it is cool it is a solid that is very jiggly and fun to play with and eat. It is actually very tasty and totally edible, problem is what it is made of is not very appetizing. It is made of gelatin, which is made by boiling the bones, skin and hides of animals. It is a protein extract.
But if you can get past that, the cold, fruity, slippery fun is waiting for you!

Enough British sarcasm. It is flavored gelatin. Oops!, Flavoured gelatin. I know you have been eating this stuff for years. Jell-o is an American Dessert. Jam is jam. Jelly is jelly, and Jell-o is Jell-o. You folks are going to have to visit us in the Colonies more often........And take notes......Tell me what fruit flavor you like, and your address and I'll send you a couple of boxes. Seriously....

i always thought it was jelly, you know the wobbley kinda slimy stuff, that you make with hot water then have to wait far to long to eat because it takes ages to cool, that you have with icecream at kids parties, - i defy anyone who does not remember eating jelly and icecream!

jello is jelly. Green would make it most likely lime. Maybe it was a savory jelly like green pepper jelly or something like that. Maybe it was just coloured green to make it look festive.
