What's better- To write lengthy sentences with commas or to write many short, clear sentences?

Do people often overuse commas? I am always confused about when or when not to use them. I almost avoid them entirely. What does that say about my writing style?

Lengthy or short depends upon what you're writing. In academic writing, you often need to be clear and concise. However, in a more conversational mode, one would probably use more commas, semicolons, or dashes.

It says that you write concise sentences.
I think commas have a place, especially if you are listing things. Using them, however, depends on what you're writing and how you want to put it across.

Have varied short and long. Thats what I learned in English. It it looks better that way too, since the sentences wont look redundant.

Usually as a general rule is to use them as little as possible and purchase for yourself on basic English grammar rules.

i wouldn't avoid them....i try to make it short and clear...but i sometimes get lost in my own long sentences....
