Someone who is without belief in the existence of a god or gods.
They can be of the "weak" position (being without belief), the "strong" (belief that gods do not exist). They can also be "explicit" (consciously rejecting the notion of a god) or "implicit" (being of the "weak" position either because they are incapable of conceiving of the concept or because they were never introduced to it).

That is the exact definition. Don't let people add crap onto it (yes, theists, I'm looking at you). If you're thinking to yourself "Well does that mean an atheist ________?" Unless that blank is filled with "doesn't believe in god" don't even bother asking. An atheist may or may not believe, do, think, say, eat, or drink absolutely anything, as long as they don't believe in god, they're an atheist.

You know it seems odd that someone would ask, but my nephew had no idea what an atheist was either. "Oh, is that like a Lutheran?" People are told there is a god so often they believe everyone has bought into it.

It's a very dogmatic denial of the existence of God. An atheist denies the possibility of the existence of God, rather than trying to actively investigate the truth.

Does not actively believe in a deity (weak atheism), or,
Actively believes in the nonexistence of a deity (strong atheism).
