Some places have off-brand business, but you'll have a tough time finding one. I know that Alamo here doesn't force you to have a credit card though. Don't know if it's everywhere though.

Don't borrow the credit card of a friend. The address on the CC has to match with your license.

I rent at Dollar and Thrifty (same company) all the time with a Visa Check Card. Some local companies will rent w/o a card with a large cash deposit. Call around and don't be afraid to ask questions.

As a practical matter, no where. There are agencies that will allow it with a cash deposit in the thousands, but surely you have a friend or relative with a credit card that could help you out, don't you?

I don't know of any company that will take cash in place of a card. I know whoever has the card ( credit card) has to be present to sign etc. you can't have someone call in over the phone and do it...they have to be there.
