Christianity killed people for saying the world was round, the world orbits the sun, and that gravity holds us against the Earth (rather than the active hand of God). Why side with them on Evolution and the Big Bang?

Ignorance. Every attempt I've seen to disprove evolution stems from a major lack of understanding of evolution by the religious person who justifies their stance based on an old book of mythology, instead of evidence such as the fossil record.
They fail to realize that any theory that would replace evolution needs to account for the evidence of a progression from simple to complex as demonstrated in the fossil record. Creationism does not explain this.

The things you mentioned were done by pseudo-christians.
not all who claim to be christian are
TRUE Christians.
It is very easy to appropriate the name for one's own uses.
