I have an abcess which i discovered yesterday i went to the hospital dentist last night as i was rolling about in agony, he started me on antibiotics and i have been taking ibroufen and paracetamol for the pain, the only thing is my right hand side of my face is like a golf ball and i think it looks like it is getting bigger, alot of the pain has gone, but the swelling is worse. i have now been on the antibiotics 24hrs, just wondering if this has happened to anyone and how long it took for the swelling to go down?

ive had abcess's quite a few times, on one occasion my face swelled quite badley on the effected side. ibroprofen in an anti-flamitory as well as a pain killer. the antibiotics will kick in in around 3 days, as long as you take them as directed on the packet. rinsing your mouth out with salty water may help a bit too. most of all, please get the tooth sorted out when your better.....dont get into re-occouring abcess's like i have because i couldnt be botherd to go to the dentist.

Someone said to "not" popping or cutting the abscess , you don't want to risk that poison entering your bloodstream . With anti-biotics , it should hurt less and the swelling start to go down in about a day or two ? I have a marble size abscess now, and got to see my dentist this morning . He took an ex ray , that showed up on a monitor , and he had me hold a mirror so I could see what was going on . It's very cool , and very sad , because I'll not only loose the direct tooth below the abscess , the one beside it got to be pulled, too . If I had gone earlier when I suspected this problem I may have had to only loose one tooth , not two ! So I'll take the anti biotics "first" , then "second" , in 3 days he'll pull the 2 teeth , and no more problems , there !! The pain is unbearable !! Hang in there !!

Wait another 24hrs and if it doesnt start to go down get back to the dentist (they should have an emergency number) if they dont got to casualty. Sometimes ordinary penicillin doesnt work and you need an additional anti biotic (Metronazole or something similar sounding). This happened to me last time I had a tooth abcess - the thing kept on swelling and spread right round my gum - the other pills took it down in 12 hours - I sympathize xxxx

You might go to the hospital dentist and see if this is normal or not. I had an abcessed tooth and it didn't swell.....but gotta be careful, you might end up losing the tooth like I did and at age 19 I had a partial because I had no permanent tooth under it. It was a baby tooth, that's a whole different story. Get it checked out again ok.

This is what you do...get an iceskate and a rock and smash the tooth out of your mouth. Just kidding :) It's going to take probably 2-3 days before the antibiotics start working full time. I would just stay on the ibuprofen or maybe just the Tylenol (paracetamol) instead. Too much ibuprofen hurts your stomach. Also, you can rinse your mouth with salt water or watered down hydrogen peroxide. Good luck with that!

Sometimes the swelling will continue until the antibiotics take effect, but I would chec with the hospital just to be sure. Swelling in the face can be a serious matter. Call the hospital and tell them what is going on just to be safe. Don't wait until the swelling goes to your airway and messes up your breathing.

The antibiotics will take about 48 hours to work properly and once they kick in you should be ok and the swelling will go down but you dont get an absess without an initial problem so make sure you get it sorted otherwise believe me it will come back if not sooner than later. Good Luck

If the swelling continues and starts to swell around the eye socket and the pain becomes unbearable, go back to the hospital immediately. The antibiotics should have had some effect by now, but as it seems to be getting worse don't wait.

The antibiotics should get the swelling down by 1-3 days. If it doesn't improve by then, see the dentist again.

Best way to get rid...........
Forget anti biotics,, just wrap a hot water bottle in a towel & press it against abcess, this will ease the pain and after a few hrs your abcess will burst
then just spit out and rinse your mouth with mouthwash, carry on with the antibiotics tho because they will kill any infection left over,, JOB DONE without major dental expense, just costs a few hrs or your life
