There is no one correct answer. Some wells are pure, others aren't. Some lakes are cleaner than others. The only way I would drink water is if it's treated - I've been in the water testing and purifying business for 18 years. There are many types of purifying tablets, filters and even ultraviolet light sticks for disinfection available. I'd suggest using them. Note that rainwater may also have contaminants from the air. Public water supplies come from rivers, lakes, ponds, shallow wells, deep wells, and even oceans (although treating salt water is very expensive).

Rain is the cleanest source. Wells are the next cleanest source. Rivers and ponds are all more or less polluted with animal droppings, human pollution of both. Water from such sources must be treated to remove contaminants and kill disease causing bacteria.

Drainage from reed and grass covered wetlands tends to be clean since the vegetation absorbs nitrates and many pollutants. This has been used as a water treatment strategy with good results.
