I have two dogs:

One full bred Beagle
and
One mixed-Beagle

About every week or so, my full bred Beagle produces this stinky, nasty, fishy smell. It comes from his bottom, and we have to go right in and wipe his bottom with a baby wipe and disinfect whatever he was sitting on, or wherever he was. My other mixed Beagle does the same, but it is not nearly as strong.

So, what can I do to stop this smell. Is it his diet? Does this happen to all dogs?

Most likely it is his anal glands - they are small sacs around the anus that can fill up with a really stinky, nasty fluid, especially if your dog has diarrhea or soft stools. Some dogs will empty their own sags by dragging their butts on the carpet, or chewing around their rear ends. My mom has her vet manually empty her chihuahua's anal sacs - you can do it yourself, but I wouldn't recommend it. My Rottweiler/German Shepherd mix will occasionally chew at his rear and I'll smell that smell - it's disgusting and gross to us, but fairly natural to them.

I don't know VERY much about this, but I know that dogs have a gland (or something) right on their butt, and this gland occasionally needs to be (this is gross) squeezed so that all that icky stuff gets out of there. This is also why you see dogs scooching their butts across the floor, b/c they're trying to get that stuff out. You can take them to a groomer and have them do it for you. Most groomers do it routinely when a dog comes in for a bath or cut or treatment. Some breeds are worse than others and have to have it done pretty frequently. I know that dachshunds are pretty bad for it, so beagles are probably the same way. Hope this helped!

I'm sorry I'm not an expert. But here's what I think. Dogs will mark their territory with urine (maybe there is some other hormonal mixture that they spray with?) But more curious to me is the pungent odor. Do the dogs ever eat people food? Just feed them dry kibble only to give them a good diet and keep them from having upset stomachs from food that isn't really good for them, like people food.
Are they neutered? If not, this is significant. I suggest all dogs that are not superior breeding stock be neutered.
I would certainly call my vet and ask them what they think. They are there for you with all of your pet problems. Good luck.
The only time I've had a similar problem was when my dogs were given rich people food like greasey meat or animal fats or cheese and such. Then they get runny diareah that will be very often, runny and smelly. Gosh I hope you find out and let us know what this is about.

It is his anal glands and all dogs do it. His diet can affect how bad they are. does he lick the bottoms of his feet a lot? because if he does that and the full anal glands are good signs that he has food allergies. Talk to your vet. They can recommend a food change and express their anal glands. They can also show you how to do it if you are brave enough to do it. using the baby wipes is great because it helps soothe their bottoms because it can be painful if they are really full. It does sound like he might have food allergies if he has anal glands that need to be expressed every week. Definitely talk to your vet. if you have any questions email me.

That's a great question. I have 2 male dogs and it seems like only one of them has "the smell." We had a female before and hers was really bad. It looks like the answers with the anal glands are correct. Interesting...

My mother's dog has this problem. There are anal glands in the rectum that needs to be squeezed to release this fluid. My mother has the groomer do it every so often. I would not do it myself at first until you are shown the proper way

This doesn't happen to my dog so I say it is not normal. It could be their anal glands need expressing. Take them to a vet.

you need to check the anal glands to see if they are alright and it could also be the diet you got them on to but not no expert but I would see what the vet says to you.
