Do you need to be obese or just overweight?

2006-12-29 07:56:17 · 18 answers · asked by Lorelei Lee 3 in Health Diet & Fitness

BMI over 25 is considered overweight but you have to have a BMI over 30 to be considered obese. Although I need to lose about 40 pounds I still fall in the overweight not the obese category. I have tried diet and exercise (gym 7 x per week) but I don't lose much weight and put it back on eventually...

You need a BMI of 30 or more to get diet pills on prescription in the UK, unless you have diabetes, then your BMI needs to be 27+.

In the UK you'd be given Meridia (and appetite Suppresent) or Xenical (stops the body absorbing fat). Both are available on line without prescription for about £60 per month.

Applause to the people who say 'You only need diet and excerise', that's great for them, but for some of us we need a bit more help than that.

I think you would have to be obese, overweight is not too much of a worry. You would only need to be about 14lbs overweight to be obese, that shocked me because the doctor told my brother in law he was obese and he doesn't even look that big. I read that there is a new one on the market that garauntees you to drop 2 dress sizes and the NHS will be using them soon.

It depends on the doctor, but generally, anyone 50 lbs. or more overweight can get a prescription and have it be covered by insurance. But, be careful! Once an insurance company labels a person obese, that person's insurance premiums may go way up!

I would think your BMI just needs to be in the overweight catergory. Im sure theyll monitor that to make sure you dont get thinner than "normal". But unless your obese you dont need to see a doctor. Get asome Trimspa. Its a miracle and depending hwow much you need to lose you wont be on it long. I took it only a few months. Its not a lifelong thing.

You need to be as little as 18 pounds overweight. If you are not 18 pounds or more over weight they will not be able to prescribe you any weight loss medications because it could have an adverse effect on you and they could be sued for malpractice.

well the doctor is gonna tell you to eat right and exercise, then they'll see how that works. If you dont do good with that then they'll give you some pills to speed up ur metabolism. If that doesnt work well then they'll give you the diet pills. Its kinda a process. I just got my diet pills they work ok. But you loose more pounds if you exercise. (like jogging or running< Not walking)

Pills are NOT going to work for anyone who does not stop the bad eating/no exercising behavior. That's like putting a band-aid on a gunshot. Might stop the bleeding for a second, but if you don't get out of dodge, you are just going to get shot again.

I guarantee if you eat less and exercise more you WILL lose weight.

If pills resulted in permanent, meaningful weight loss no one would be overweight anymore. The only way to lose weight and keep it off is to consume fewer calories than you burn. It's simple math, not pills, not carbs, not apple cider vinegar. Then once you have the habits in place that replace bad habits, you have to keep them up for the rest of your life. I will be a lifetime calorie-counter and that's fine with me. It's a lifestyle change, not pills.
