glad to see you want an american car, the fusion is a good car and so is the chevy impala, you need to check out the impala if you want a lot of hauling space, the trunk in that thing is huge!, I haven't seen a trunk like that since the fifties, good luck with whatever you buy.

As long as you are not upside down on the Explorer, trading it in is an option. The Fusion is not a bad car, it is worthy of consideration if you are looking at a lower end model. Once it gets up into the mid 20's a Camry or an Accord is a much better choice. If you can get a Fusion for say $17000, it would be hard to find a better value. All things being the same, look for a 2-3yr old vehicle and let someone else take a beating on the depreciation. Toyotas and Hondas are always good bets.

All the cars mentioned are good cars. As everyone will tell you, Toyota and Honda make a very good product. But I must say the Fusion or its Mercury counterpart, the Milan, are excellent choices as well.
If you like the Ford line, these models will be a great way to get a smaller, more effecient vehicle than your Explorer. And they have a ton of eye appeal and features.
When you equip these cars equally to the imports, you'll save yourself some money as well. Plus, these vehicles now come with extended powertrain warranties that include roadside assistance.
These cars are getting great reviews from the independent survey companies. Don't overlook them.
No matter what you do, I would not suggest you go with a compact like a Civic, Yaris, etc. Stepping into a vehicle that much smaller than your SUV will lead to an unhappy experience. You'll miss the space of your SUV in one of these small cars. A midsize like the ones I mentioned or the Camry or Accord, will be an easier transition for you from your SUV.

I drive an 88' Honda CRX which i love but unfortunately they dont make them anymore. A good small car would be a CIVIC, or even a new Toyota Yaris. I am not a fan but girls usually like them because they are "cute" (so I hear girls say). Other than that you may want to look into an Echo or a Ford Focus. My advice though, stick with imports such as a Honda or a Toyota.

Every few years one of the BIG auto makers offers better deals on it's line of cars than the other manufacturers. It changes every couple of years and this competition is good for us (the consumer). Right now the Chrysler family seems to be offering the best ''bang for the buck''. Can't hurt to check them out and see if they have what you're looking for!

I would suggest the Honda Fit or Civic, if it's a new one you have in mind. What are you driving right now by the way? If you already have a Civic, then downsizing would probably mean getting a scooter or a bike.

For a non-hybrid I would either suggest the Toyota Corolla, Honda Civic, or any model Scion.
