My puppy is getting spayed next week and i have ordered her a soft e-collar (a cone- but soft made with fabric) and i ordered it too small and have to send it back and exchange it for a larger one that cost more... is it really worth all this work. My puppy is a 5 month old germain shepard husky

I have had 3 dogs spayed, all of different breeds and temperaments, and none of them chewed at their stitches. If they were licking them I would tell them no and they stopped.
FYI an 'e-collar' is an electronic or shock collar. An Elizabethan collar is the lampshade kind used to stop chewing.

The vet will send her home with one by default, unless I'm wrong, and a spay isn't an E-collar surgery.
She should probably have an E-collar of some sort, because when her stitches start to itch, she'll chew on them and hurt herself. Whether you want to buy her a special one or use the plastic vet's model is up to you.
What's more important than softness is transparency, so the dog can better tell what's going on around her. Order a see-through plastic E-collar, if the vet doesn't have that kind, and that should drop the price compared to the large cloth collar.

Yes but I would get the hard plastic. Trust me my German shepard husky pulled out all of her stitches when she didnt have an ecollar on and I have used the soft collared ones as a trial in my old clinic and the animals can bend the soft ones all over the places and are pretty much worthless. So get a hard plastic one and even then she may figure away to get to the sutures (have had some flexible dogs get around them but very rarely) it will be much easier on you and her. you dont want to have her go back under anesthesia to repair the suture site because she licked it apart. She will probably run into things but it is kind of funny and sad all at the same time. they are quite pitiful but dont take it off unless you can watch her COMPLETELY. It only takes a minute to rip out a suture.Hope this helps

Of all of the dogs that I have spayed over the years, we have never had to use any collars on them to prevent them from licking or chewing. If the vet feels the need, they will have one on when you pick the puppy up. If there isn't one on her when you pick her up, just keep an eye on the incision to make sure it looks good and she should be fine. You'll be able to tell if she is chewing or licking it, by looking at it. Save your money, and get a new toy after she has healed and can play again.

When I adopted my dog out she was spayed 2 days before I got her. They gave me care instructions and what to watch for in. I did not receive an e-collar instead I simply watched her to make sure she did not lick her stitches to much and that she was not too active (jumping around, going up and down stairs, etc.)
The stitches that were use though were the dissolving ones that just came off after awhile (which I never seen before). Whatever the case they come off in a fast pace and the body healed. Good Luck.

I mean I know it will cost more but it is worth it. I got my black lab spayed last month and we had the cone for her and we would see her try to lick the wound but she couldn't. But we had it off towards the end and she had one stich that started coming out. So get it. Especially if it is a girl.

Most dogs do not need a collar unless they start lick or chewing their stiches. I would wait and not get one. There shouldn't be a need for one but if need arises petsmart sells cones. If you see her messing with the stitches correct her.

My dogs has had numerous surgical procedures and the vet has by no skill given her an E-collar. i offered one from petco for the 1st surgical operation. The clearish plastic sort and he or she hated it. the subsequent I have been given a soft one and it labored lots greater effective, besides the undeniable fact that she grow to be nevertheless no longer satisfied appropriate to the full ordeal. i can not endure in innovations what they fee nonetheless. I truly have by no skill used them for a spay or neuter nonetheless. in case you reside close to a puppy save i might wait and notice how she does. they are alot greater costly on the vet.

We never used e-collars on our dogs when they got spayed. We just kept them near us to make sure they didn't focus too much attention to the area of the incision.

I wouldn't think so. Most dogs don't mess with the area much, just keep a good eye on her and if you see her, your vet should be able to give you one or rent you one for a temporary basis.
