a 25 square mile of ice broke away from the pole. it's disturbing because global warming caused the ice to crack and it's bad as a sign of the whole planet becoming more and more wonky. it's why polar bears are becoming endangered---loss of habitat! no place to hunt and they have to swim dangerous distances from one ice floe to the next.

Polar bears may go on the threatened species list of the US Department of Wildlife. That may supposedly require the reduction of greenhouse gas emissions, but then there is the flap about whether natural processes like volcanism are far more significant than human activity in the whole greenhouse effect thing.
