I'm a flight attendant and I had something happen about a month ago. The captain called me up as we were flying. We were about 34,000 and cruising to our destination (I think LAX).
He told me that as they were talking with Salt Lake Center they were getting some pretty loud interference.
So I made an announcement for everyone to check they're cellphones and the interference stopped.
All electronic devices give off signal that can effect communications. Some more than others.

They used to advise this as they weren't sure if the signal would interfere with the planes electrical and computer systems, as they weren't sure they played it safe. Think they recently determined that this was not a problem so mobiles may be allowed in future.
One problem with mobiles on planes though could be that they are able to connect to a lot more masts at the same time as there is no buildings blocking the signal which may cause problems with the actual mobile networks.

I'm unsure if this story is true, however it was on Have I got news for you ages ago! Apparently, a man starting using his mobile phone whilst the aeroplane was coming into land, after a couple of minutes, the 1st officer burst out of the flight deck and shouted, who ever is on the phone turn it off now!! it's interfering with the radar from ground control!! unsure if its true, but you can bet your life I always make sure mine is switched off.

The FAA has said that Cell Phones, and Portable TV's and Radios may not be turned on at all during a flight. Some other portable electronics may be turned on after a certain altitude.

all electrial devices emit some form of electrical interferance when in operation, inside the metal skin of an airplane this really messes up the compasses and direction finding equiptment, there is no safe way to eliminate the interferance, thus the requirement. its not that they want to hassle the passengers, its a necessary safety problem with only one solution.

Up until very recently it was widely believed that cell phones would interfere with the instrumentation in the cockpit....or at least had that potential.
As you may have heard FAA is considering allowing cell phone use in flight now - as they have determined there is negligible risk.
I for one don't want to be stuck onboard an aircraft subjected to tens of folk yapping on cell phones!

It interferes with their communication and navigation devices. You don't want that do you? Just turn it off for a few minutes.

One wouldn't make much difference. If everyone on the plane had their nintendos going on take off and landing, it might upset the fly-by-wire.
