I have a recipe that calls for buttermilk, but I don't have any. Is there any way that I can turn my milk into buttermilk? I remembering hearing something about adding vinegar to milk, but don't know if that's true.

1 cup buttermilk = 1 cup milk PLUS 1 Tbsp vinegar or lemon juice (let stand for 10 minutes before using in recipe)

1 cup buttermilk = 1 cup milk PLUS 1-3/4 teaspoons cream of tartar

1 cup buttermilk = 1 cup water PLUS 4 Tbsp powdered buttermilk (reconstitute before using or add dry to dry ingredients and wet to wet ingredients before mixing

1 cup buttermilk = 1/4 cup milk PLUS 3/4 cup yogurt

if you're making baked goods, you may need to add additional items on top of the milk and acid.... it's best to just go to your store or convenience store and buy a small amount.

buttermilk is the 'whey' left over after making butter from milk,,, it doesn't have any 'acid' in it if real,,, when you add acid to the milk and then add it to baked goods, it will mess up the balance in the recipe. now, if you're making a dip or cooked item on the stove, then the acid thing will work just fine, you get the same 'flavor'..... some people notice the difference, tho, i do.

good luck, hope everything works!!

I never use real buttermilk, i always use milk, with a few drops of vinegar. Works everytime. You set it aside until it curds a little.

If i was you, I wouldn't go trying things. My grandma makes buttermilk by letting milk sit out for two days. Them use it. But I would just go buy some.

For most recipes you can add a teaspoonful of vinegar per cup of milk. Let stand about 10 minutes and it will work.

Yes, I do this all the time. 1 Tbls. acid (lemon juice, white or cider vinegar) to 1 cup milk. Let it set for 10-15 minutes.

Missingora is right, I do this too and it works just fine. Warm the milk a little first.
