Hi

I am absolutely terrified of getting on planes. I feel very unsafe during the flight and always have to take strong tranqulizers to make it through the flight.

Does anyone have any piece of advice how I could deal with my fear and possibly overcome it?

Thanks in advance.

Whatever you do, do not panic. Very rarely do plane crashes happen, and you are much more likely to get in a car accident than in a plane crash. There is no reason to be afraid. Try communicating with others during the flight. If possible, engage in conversation with the flight attendent, and talk to the person who y ou are traveling with. Bring an MP3 player or an iPod on board and once the captain says "Okay", listen to them. Read a book, or watch the onboard programming or film. Best yet, take a nap or go to sleep during your flight to keep your mind off of feeling unsafe. Calm your mind and just think about what you are going to do once you get to your destination. Sort out the itenirary and memorize it, so you'll be very prepared. The flight shouldn't be your memories from the vacation, the actual vacation should! The airplane is just the means of transportation to get you to the place that you'll have an awesome time. When actually getting on the airplane, you shouldn't be afraid. All you are doing is an everyday task, just a bit different. Walking, but through a gate. Or climbing stairs, but to board an airplane. Very simple. Just keep your mind off of insecurities and have fun.

Talk to the flight attendants during your next flight, especially if the plane is not very full. I used to be very afraid of flying too (although I just drank a lot of whisky instead of taking tranquilizers, ha ha) and I had a long talk with a friend of mine who is a flight attendant. He explained a lot of the mechanical stuff about flying--- how the plane stays up even if the weather is horrible, and why the landings seem so hard sometimes--- and knowing the science bits made a huge difference. I knew a lot of the science already but having someone talk to me and put it into words I could understand made a huge difference!

I also get really nervous.....But when I do fly, I take a book to read, magazines, and try to take a late night flight....so that I sleep throught it. An ipod is great.....remember, chances of an airplane crashing are extremely low in comparison to crashing your car on a road.

take things onboard that will put your mind off the thought of flying.. like a portable DVD player, Ipod, or try to sleep......read magazines.... plus your safer flying in a plane than driving your car
