I have an older (i think 13 yrs old) poodle/shitzu mix, that i got 2 yrs ago to save from being put in the pound. I am going Monday to pick up a new puppy. My poodle/shitzu gets along great with bigger dogs and cats, but i'm worried she will hate the new one. How can i help her adjust without yelling or having to punish her when the new one gets here?

Oh cr*p, you scared me. I thought your 13 year old dog was having puppies.

Make sure she knows that she is the queen. Resist the temptation to spend more time with the puppy than with her (I know, pups are irresistable). Do not allow the puppy to harass her, and if she tells the pup off for being rude respect that she is teaching him doggy manners. (See the article "He just wants to say Hi!" http://www.flyingdogpress.com/sayhi.html ). If she is not actually harming him, do not punish her for this. (Puppies will scream as if they are being killed when an older dog tells them off). Reward her for being peacefully in the pup's presence. If every time he comes up to her she gets a treat, she'll associate him with good things.

Remember that she may be sore (arthritis or whatever) and not appreciate a crazy pup bumping into her. It is your job to protect her from this. Make the puppy treat her with respect.

Try letting the new puppy visit first.
The older dog will have seen the puppy before.
Don't yell at the dogs, talk to them with authority,
and keep it short. No baby talk.
Start watching the TV show, " Dog Whisperer ".
The puppy will need it.

There is more to having a pet Shih Tzu/poodle than you might have first thought. To be more precise, there's more to understanding and loving it than you would have ever even considered. You want to make sure you and your dog are both having a happy and an enjoyable time together - always. maby play with them both give them treats to.

when you get the new puppy make sure that you introduce the two slowly and that you monitor them when they are together. if they seem to get annoyed or bitey with each other separate them for a while and then put them back together. also it may be a good idea to keep them separate during the first night. eventually they will get accustomed to the idea of sharing your house.
