It is a psychotic state in which the patient is immobile or almost immobile, or alternatively, engage in repeated, purposeless movements. The body may be in an odd and apparently uncomfortable position, or they may just sit or lie motionless.

They will not respond to others, except to on occasion echo back what the speaker has said, and although conscious, they will often not respond even to mildly painful stimuli.
