Cholesterol is a type of fatty substance that occurs naturally in the body. there is good and bad Cholesterol and the ratio of the two is more important than the total you have. If you have a high LDL low density lypoprotein it is a good thing. If you have a high HDL high density lypoprotein it is bad. If you have a high LDL it can off set the high HDL making the total high cholesterol not as bad. What is bad is when you have a low LDL and a high HDL...the bad cholesterol is too hign and is not offset. What having a high HDL does is cause buildup in the arteries of the body, corodid artery, heart and any artery in the body and this is on the walls of the arteries and can cause blockages. These blockages can cause heart attacks if a chunk breaks off and goes to the heart or stroke if it goes to the brain, whatever. Also, it can block the flow of blood to areas of the body and cause other problems as well. Some people are born or have family traits that cause them to naturally have high cholesterol, hard to treat or get down. Others get it that way by the foods they eat, treatable by diet. So, most cholesterol is from animal fats, hydrogenated oils like margerines and too much butter, fats in general and not enough fibre, veggies, fruit and good oils like nuts, olive oil, omega's and fish oils. so this ia about all I can get out of my brain for you. Hope this helps. Exercise, diet, 1-glass of red wine or grape juice, and family history play parts in your overall heart health as does cholesterol levels.

Okay the person above said that HDL is bad and LDL is good. SHe got them mixed up, LDL is bad(L for lousy!). High density lipids because they are dense flow through your blood stream kind of like a block of lead, they can also get rid of LDL that accumualtes on the walls of your blood vessels. LDL because of its low density is like a sponge or big fluffy feathers, they take up a lot of room and stick to your vessels. High hdl is good, it can lower your LDL. Both types are created from saturated fat. If you excercise enough you create HDL, that is the only way to create HDL otherwise it becomes LDL and clogs up your bloodstream. Make sure you excercies at least 30 min a day and involve yourself in sports.

They are types of fats in the blood produced by the liver and also found in animal foods like meat and cheese. The brain needs it to function.

High is anything over 200. If it's too high, it clogs your veins.
