If you really want to get some "first hand" information on the dog breeds, go to the next local dog show. There you can meet the dogs in person, and talk to the owners and breeders. A good breeder will be willing to tell you the breed's bad points as well as the good ones.

If you do need a larger dog, that would perfer to be outside, I would get a Border Collie or a Bouvier Des Flanders, possibly even a Boxer.
Border Collies love to be outdoors, and also make great companion dogs as well as gaurd dogs. They do well around other pets, with the proper training. I would buy one from a reputable breeder in your area to get the best results and proper socialization.
Bouvier Des Flanders are dogs that were bred to work. They are very loveable, but do require constant maintinance of their coat. They are big, furry dogs, and they do look rather menacing, but they aren't. Just looking at one would scare a robber or a criminal of some sort. They are excellent with other children, and with the right training, are great with other pets.
A Boxer would also be an ideal choice, seeing as their size and looks are enough to scare anyone. They can be barkers, and aren't the best with other pets, and considering that you have cats, the Boxer may not be the best choice unless the dog is outside 24/7. They don't require much grooming, but do need to be properly socialized, or you may actually get a dog that is very agressive, as goes with all dogs.
If you want a true gaurd dog, go with a Doberman Pinscher, or a Rottweiler. Those dogs will make their presence known by anyone who steps foot on their "teritory" so to speak.
Best of Luck

Husky's are also in the Spitz family of dog. If you are getting a puppy you shouldn't really have a problem w/ the cats. The Spitz family of dogs tend to be a bit more independent than other breeds.

My German Shepard is a GREAT guard dog. And she "raised" our cats as her pups so she is very good with them. Try to get a younger one so that it knows that your cats are part of his/her family and wont attack them. And if you get the right one females are just as aggressive as the males. Mine bites first asks later unless she knows you. So a female like her would be a great guard and companion dog (when its family she whines and carries on like an excited puppy until she gets enough attention-which usually is never enough for her) so they can be great family dogs too. I dont know much on the Finnish Spitz but they might also be good dogs.

I've seen this exact question before....
I say go for a moderately sized German Shepard. Look on PetFinder.com. You will find a bunch on PetFinder.com both puppy, young and adult. The great thing about getting an adult dog is you know the size and temperament of the dog.
Good Luck!

ok there are actually a few dogs that will do! one is a german shepherd! (cop dogs) they are very large (not too large) and for the most part easy to train. There are australian shepherds which are very active dogs and are very easy to train and are good guard dogs. honestly tho, i would go with a german shepherd! i had one for 16 years and it was the best pet i ever had, it was my best friend and my most loyal companion! he was very protective and very strong! i suggest that whatever you get tho you get it as a puupy at first! good luck in your find!

Norwegian Elkhounds are great with kids and people and are one of the best watchdogs you can have. They are used to hunt Elk, Bear and other wild animals.
The words brave, independent, dependable and determined describe their personalities. As pets, they are intelligent, friendly and reliable.
