I like the idea of a very large mirror, with a wide glitzy frame. It's not very original I know, but it is a classic and hard to beat. Large wall sconces on both sides of the mirror also give it the final touch (personally I like the symetrical look best). I have this arrangement and have received so many compliments on mine. Oh yes, I also have a long and very full swag that falls over the top of the mirror a little way, just to add a touch of color reflection in my livingroom. It's all very nice. I think you may like it.

Basically, you can put pretty much anything you would like. I won't tell you what, since there are already so many people who have give you ideas such as mirrors, painting, musical instruments, antique silver trays, etc., but I will give you a good piece of advice: Be careful what you hang up there. You may want to hang a painting or a musical instrument but keep in mind that heat does rise and the wall behind will be a bit warmer. If you are using an oil painting or a delicate musical instrument, the heat can damage the paint or the wood of an instrument by drying it out in the long run. It isn't a good idea to put a plasm screen there either because the heat will shorten the lifespan of the plasma. Even if you've seen this in a decorating magazine, keep in mind that those photos that are in magazines are just for that reason: to make a room look nice. It doesn't mean the room is liveable....
Oh... can't help it.... I love hanging a mirror over a fireplace. A really nice large mirror, usually with an antique feel to it. And keep the mantle sleek by not putting too much stuff on it. And always use an uneven number of items on the mantle shelf for harmony...

Ok.....first you are going to need a focal point. Either a large mirror, artwork or something big.
Then on the mantle itself arrange collections in groups of 5 or 3. Do largest items in back, and arrange them in decending sizes then put tiny pieces in front. GO to hgtv.com for grouping suggestions.

Put a large piece of artwork that you like centered above the mantel, then put different sized candles in a cluster off to one side and then place a few personal frames on the other end slightly facing the middle.

A large painting. Go to a discount closeout store and look in the homewares department. You can always find stuff like that looks real expensive but you'll get a great deal on.
