Friend eats stranger's food in restaurant after they leave?

I was out with a group of friends for happy hour and one of the guys in our group was hungry, so after a table of people left, he saw they left behind a few pieces of pizza.

Before the waitress had a chance to clear the table, he grabbed the pizza and ate it.

We all just didn't know how to react ... how would you have reacted?

This is about the equivalent of taking some food out of the garbage and eating it. Although I'm sure the other restaurant patrons were perfectly nice people, it's not necessarily the best idea to eat food that unknown people have handled. I suppose your friend didn't do anything dishonest, because the pizza would have been thrown away, but it just seems unwise.

Ah, the taboos of Western Civilization.
It's customary, when sharing a giant pizza with a bunch of people, to avoid handling slices you're not planning to eat. Unless the group that left had a vindictive streak, and spat all over the uneaten pizza, it was probably untouched. Sanitation-wise, it's fine.
However, it does make your friend look poor and uncivilized, if resourceful. Don't invite him to parties, unless you need a foil to make yourself look good.

Many times, pizza left may have fallen on the floor and such. While it is rare, your friend still looks like someone with absolutely no maners; even if the pizza is perfectly clean.

Pass on the rest... It looks bad but come on the only place that pizza was going to go was the trash... it would be worse if your friend stayed hungry
