Find a National Park that you'd like to visit and plan your trip around that. There tend to be lots of inexpensive activities in these areas. One of the best things my wife and I ever did was by a National Parks Passport (they're little books you can get for like $5). When you go to any National Park you can get a free stamp with the date that you were there. We plan all our trips around National Parks now!

Mammoth Caves in Kentucky is a pretty cool place. There are some beautiful state parks in West Virginia and Pennsylvania too. Grand Teton NP and Yellowstone are beautiful. I haven't been to Acadia in Maine, but I've heard it's beautiful. Really depends on what your interests are.

Think about places with kitchens. On my honeymoon we went to the Smoky Mountains (which is within driving distance for us) and rented a cabin. It was on top of a mountain and had lots of privacy and even a hot tub. We did day trips into the park (which was free!) and shopping at little country stores. The kitchen was great because we saved tons of money by not eating out except for a couple times (and when you do, you can reheat your leftovers). The gas down and back and the cabin were our only big expenses. It was great!
