If you live in the Midwest US try a store like 2nd Wind Exercise Equipment. They sell gently used exercise equipment. With all of the after Christmas and New Year's Day sales you could probably get a good deal at Sear's, Dick's, Sport's Authority, etc.

A cheap treadmill is not a good one. Nothing like a LifeFitness one, but those run $2k plus. I've ran on a friend's $800 treadmill and I thought the entire apparatus was going to break.

We got one at Costco, and it works great. I think we paid about $800, but it was brand new and had everything on it that I wanted (wide belt, digital info, you can hook it up to your computer, etc.). The only negative is they do not deliver it to your house for you, and the box is big & heavy. Assembly is easy.
