when i went to the ER for something unrelated, they asked the usual 'when did you last have a tetanus shot?' as part of the check-in. I said ' I think about 8 years ago or so."

the nurse told me- if you don't know always say
'i don't know'- that way they'll give you one if you need it.

as for your concern- i was told you can get a tetanus shot at any point-you don't have to wait ten years or whatever (that's how long it's supposed to last, although some say it's less).

so, if you feel better getting one, get one. It won't hurt you any.

and then, at least for the next few years- you know you're covered and you can answer - yes, i have had a tetanus vac. i had it in 12/06.

Probably not. A thumb tack is small enough that your body should be able to defend itself, but I would still go in for a shot. The fact of the matter is that you don't know what you might have gotten from that tack other than tetanus, so you really should see a doctor.

The shot is better than the consequences of not getting the shot and getting tetanus.

Don't forget to clean the wound out well, with soap & water and then rubbing alcohol. You want to try and get at least a few drops of blood out of it. You want to make a puncture like that bleed to help clean out the wound.

If you've already had a tetanus shot within the past 3 years, you're probably okay.

depends on when your last one was. you need a new one every 10 years. this happened to my sister and she hadn't had one for 9 years; she was fine. : )
