I know where and how to get the marriage certificate and have already found an ordained officiant. However, what about all the other details. Like the changing of the last name. Do I have to fill out seperate paperwork for that? Any relevant information from anyone who has eloped or had a very small wedding would be appreciated. Please, no information is needed on my or your relationship opinions.

Every place is different on changing your name. Some will require a copy of the certified marriage certificate, some just need a phone call, but every place will be different. No matter how small your wedding is, changing your name is a pain and will take several calls, mailings and in person visits. Have fun!

First, you and your fiance both need to go to city hall and apply for a marriage license. You will need to bring photo identification with you to prove your age, etc. You can usually pick up the marriage license the day after you apply. If you want to change your last name, you will need to indicate your new name on the marriage license application.

When the officiant performs the ceremony, you will have to give him the marriage license. The officiant, you, your fiance, and your witnesses will sign the marriage license. After the ceremony, the marriage license must be mailed back to city hall. About 2 weeks after that, you will receive your marriage certificate in the mail. The official marriage certificate will show the new last name you have chosen for yourself. You can use your new last name as soon as you are married, but you will need to show the official marriage certificate in order to have it legally changed on bank accounts, drivers' license, etc.

You may immediately start using your new married name after the wedding, as it will be your legal name. Most importantly, you will need to notify Social Security of your name change. They will require either the original or a notarized copy of your marriage certificate to make the change. Most credit card and utility companies will change the surname without documentation upon notification. Some may require a non notarized copy of your marriage certificate.

Many things can be handled over the phone. However, things like a name change on your social security card or your passport will require your marriage certificate. It would be helpful to you if you'll sit down now and list everything that will require a name change. Things'll go much more smoothly and easily if you do.

Need to call the county clerk's office where you will be filing the certificate on completion. They will have all the details; it does vary from state to state and there is often additional paperwork involved

If you use your husband's last name, notify your creditors, if any, of the name change. Other than buying the license, taking the blood test-you did, didn't you--and filing the completed license, that's it.
