Everyone handles a tragedy in their own manner and it may not have anything to do with faith. Its the old "half glass full vs half glass empty" mentality. One may think that it is all part of God's master plan (glass half full) while the other may feel that God did not answer their prayer (glass half empty).

Some folks do become bitter towards their faith and beliefs. However, if that person had truly strong convictions about their faith before their tragedy, I'm positive that they will eventually return to it.

Also, tragedy does have its positive side. Just think how many people darkened the door of a church for the first time in many years when 9/11 occurred.

That is not true. The tragedy is a test of that faith...and the one who had less is obviously the one who turned bitter. Read the Book of Job again....

The funny thing about faith is that it can only be measured in the present. There is no way of knowing how much faith someone has except by their response to a present crisis.

I have heard it said (though I can't back this up with data) that the question of "why do bad things happen to good people" has caused:

a) more people to turn away from religion, and
b) more people to turn towards religion

then any other question.

For me - I find religion's answers to this question appalling and I consider it strong evidence for not believing. But that's just me read on the subject.

mortal personalities come from so many different perspectives. Mortals are mortal and all are weak in spirit...some are just weaker than others... it is too easy just to say they did not have enough faith to begin with... no one, except God, can know the depth of hurt in an others soul...

How do you measure faith?

This is not always true. It's not a fact that two cannot both be stong together.
