Yes, the pope is Catholic. The pope is the head of the Catholic church. He is thought to be in the line of apostolic succession. This means that he is the head of today's church as the apostles were in the early church.

Yes, being Catholic is a requirement to be Pope.
Any baptized male Catholic can be elected Pope. Although the chances of a non-cardinal being elected is very small.
If the person elected is not yet a bishop, then he is ordained a bishop before accepting the office of the Papacy.

All Baptized members of the Church are Catholic. The word means "according to the whole" - and the Creeds (Apostle's, Nicene and Athanasian) know of only ONE, HOLY, CATHOLIC and APOSTOLIC Church.
KATH = "according to"
HOLOS = "the whole"
Ergo, the Pope (the Bishop of Rome) - as a Baptized member of the ONE WHOLE, is in fact, "Kath-holic"
