A game patch is an add-on to a game that fixes a certain problem, or 'hole' in the game.

Sort of like an update

A "patch" for a game is usually created when something was not working in the game or they figured out a way to make an improvement in some area AFTER the manufacturer has already released the software on CDROM and it is in stores or purchased by people.

To get you these fixes or updates, the software manufacturer will issue an "official" patch that carries a revision number or version number.

For example, if you play Diablo II and connect to Battle.Net, the software automatically downloads and installs the latest patches so that EVERYONE playing the game is running the same version.

There are also "unofficial" patches. Sometimes a hacker or hobbyist will learn how the program works and make changes to it to add their own personal improvements, and then they will share these with others.

For example, the online game called "Dark Age of Camelot" has an option for players to use their own custom user interface. Players used to develop their own little pop-up windows and files that work with the software to show maps, help in crafting, provide additional task bars and compasses, because the provided version either did not offer this or was not as nice as the ones they developed.

Any time you are using an "official" patch, it is one provided by the manufacturer and is recommended to be installed as it will fix bugs and make improvements. For "unofficial" patches, you usually use these at your own risk, and should not contact the software manufacturer if you suddenly develop strange problems with the software or anything else on your PC.

Hahaha, cheater. ;P

Like someone else said, a PATCH like a piece of cloth used to patch up a hot air balloon, just fixes a hole in the game... otherwise, bugs. Updates are what add new information into the game.

Play any online MMORPG or anything like one, and you'll have updates all the time along with patches.

Patch like a piece of cloths, used to fix some problems in the game/software. Mostly used for illegal software registrations.

patches are basically updates for programs. For video games, the definition could include increased functionality, tweaks to gameplay, new characters or new maps. most often though developers use it to correct bugs in the game's programming
