My kitten is about 8-9 weeks old and every time I open the front door to come inside, he's there trying to squeeze out or if I open it to leave, he comes running to get out. He hasn't had his shots yet and I only want him to be an indoor cat. Any suggestions???

For all of you who said get him shots and neutered, I have an appointment to get his shots this week and my vet said he can't get neutered until he's 6 months.

I also use the spray bottle on an everyday basis with everything else his mischeveous butt gets into and it doesn't even phase him. He could care less. He jumps in the bath with my 4 year old unless I close the door. I just got "lucky" with one of those kinds of cats I guess.
Thanks for all the answers though!

I actualy let my Stimpy out once and after a quick look she decided she didn't like it out there. At least you are there to watch over him. LUCK

There are two things you can try, if you don't want to spray your cat with a waterbottle or yell at him/her everytime. One is to, after you get through the door and put down your things, pick your cat up, keep a firm grip, and walk outside with him/her, staying close to the house. He/she will probably squirm a little, but walk around a little bit and let him/her smell some stuff. The second thing you can do is let him/her outside for a little bit, but stay VERY close. Usually, if they have always lived indoors, they will be crying to get back in before long. My parent's cats have accidentally gotten outside before when we were unloading groceries or whatever. They rarely got past the front porch and, when they did, they were back pretty quick. It's overwhelming for them! Once a cat did escape off of their back porch (which is screened in). She figured out how to open the door, which now has some extra latches! She was actually gone for a couple of hours, but never tried to get out again after that experience!

I don't think there is anything you can do about it. For whatever reason cats love to go outside. I have three cats (they are sisters). They are almost 2 years old and they do the same thing to me. When I come back from work they are waiting for me on the other side of the door and as soon as I open it they rush out. I do let them stay outside for a couple of hours but they don't go far. They stay near the house and I have to keep the door open or they freak out. All I can suggest is that you open the door carefully to prevent him from escaping. Also, if you haven't done so already, make sure he gets neutered as soon as possible. Good luck!!

Yeah, my old cat used to do that. Then we decided "Oh lets just let him go outside" and sure enough, he loved it and always tried to escape. He started to meow by the doors non-stop. Now, with my newer cat, she is scared to go outside. I think it has something to do with the fact that every time I have taken her outside, I carry her to my car and I take her to the vet. The first time she got spayed, second time she got shots, I don't think these were enjoyable for her, so she associates outdoors with that. When I even walk towards the front door while I'm holding her, she will scratch at me and get nervous. It's so cute.

Anyway, in agreement with the previous post, I would say spray him with water. Spraying cats with water is really effective for training. Go to Target or something, get a spray bottle, then just leave the water-filled bottle by the front door for the curious little kitty. I bet he will lose that curiosity pretty quickly.

Spray him with a water bottle everytime he comes near the door. Thats the only way I can think of.
I always let my cats out the backdoor because we live on the 3rd floor so they arent going anywhere. But for the last 3 weeks they have been doing construction, so they have not been able to go outside. So now my siamese tries to go out the front door, which in 3 years of her life she has never done.
Well spraying her with a spray bottle worked with in a few times of doing it. She doesnt try to run out the front door anymore.

Let the poor guy out! Keeping cats indoors is fundamentally wrong. If you live in a situation where letting the cat out is simply not possible, you should not have a cat. Cats are predators and need to hunt, socialise, and find their own boundaries. Fair enough if a cat never shows an interest in going outside, but if he does want to, all you are doing is imprisoning him.

Cats are just super curious and especially when a door opens, to a place they've never been, they want to bolt out and check things out. I've let my cats out on my porch a few times when they got curious and once they felt that it was too hot out, or too cold, they'd come back in and not bother to go near that door.

Get your cat its shots ASAP though. All kitties need shots.

in the adventure that your house of residing is super adequate and has the main concepts-blowing format then do in simple terms no longer enable him into the room with the exterior door. Failing that seem at setting up a extreme new child gate a pair of feet faraway from the door or a curtain around it so he cna't get to the door in a hurry. different techniques are to attempt feeding him in simple terms before he is going out, or having a good grant of toys close to the door which you will throw for him to chase, if he comes close to. then you nip out whilst hes distracted.

I have a kitten about the same age doing the same thing. I expect him to be there when i open the door so i immediately say "NO" and put my foot in front of him. I also will make a noise that will scare him off - eventually he'll get it. Kitty just gets really excited when you get home...she loves you!

try keeping a coffee can filled with something noisy like pennies and shake it. most cats don't like the loud noise an will run the other way as it hurts their ears.
