Maybe it is combination of both. Man made god in his physical/material image while the true image of god remains hidden to most men.

To accept this answer you need to accept the Bible story of creation
If we made God in the image of man, wouldn't we be playing God? If God is "just a feeling", then God is not God, he is "just a feeling" and wouldn't have an image. A circular comment but true nevertheless.
From Genesis 1:26-31:
26 Then God said: "Let us make man in our image, after our likeness. Let them have dominion over the fish of the sea, the birds of the air, and the cattle, and over all the wild animals and all the creatures that crawl on the ground."
27 God created man in his image; in the divine image he created him; male and female he created them.
28 God blessed them, saying: "Be fertile and multiply; fill the earth and subdue it. Have dominion over the fish of the sea, the birds of the air, and all the living things that move on the earth."
29 God also said: "See, I give you every seed-bearing plant all over the earth and every tree that has seed-bearing fruit on it to be your food;
30 and to all the animals of the land, all the birds of the air, and all the living creatures that crawl on the ground, I give all the green plants for food." And so it happened.
31 God looked at everything he had made, and he found it very good. Evening came, and morning followed--the sixth day
A footnote: Man is here presented as the climax of God's creative activity; he resembles God primarily because of the dominion God gives him over the rest of creation.
At least three religions accept this story of creation; the Christians, the Jews, and the Muslims. Many other reigions accept similar stories.

God is a power. We are created in his image, but not a physical image. Much like "imaging" a computer ... all the software, operating system and components that make it run. We are "imaged" after God. We simply sell ourselves short.

We are made in God's images, for if God is made in our image, we are gods, and God doesn't exits. Therin lies a paradox.
Anyway, for religions that believe in a god (singular), they usually believe that they are made in the image of said god. Such as Christians. Man, wife and child is the image of God, (father, spirit, Christ, the godhead, 3 in one). Together, they represent the image of God, which delves deeper in saying that while man is made in the image of god, he does not have the whole image of God. He needs woman and child to demonstrate the full image of God.

Scripture says we were made in the image and likeness of God in so far as our divine nature is concerned. We were created with a desire for truth and goodness which comes from.God. That's why man is always in search of his Creator.

We are made in God's image.
Who would want to serve a god made in our image?
