Having a pedometer won't make you lose weight. Walking or getting more exercise will help you use more calories.

If you take in less calories than you expend, you will lose weight.

Everyone is motivated differently. A pedometer is great to let you know how far you have walked (ie, how many steps). Ten thousand steps per day is a worthy goal. Yes, walking can help you lose weight, because exercise of any sort will use calories that would have otherwise gone to body fat!

Yep.
Having the pedometer is fun and can motivate you to want to walk more to rack up the numbers.
