Whenever I set out to get a girlfriend, I always end up "just a friend." How does that happen and how should I go about avoiding getting that answer and getting the answer I want? I mean....friendship is nice, but....it's not what I'm looking for right now...

i was unaware that you "get" a boyfriend or a girlfriend. is there a certain store you shop at?

dude, it all is about the vibe you send out. not everyone is a match for you. you gotta try a lot of pieces and see which ones fit.
and drop the expectation of a relationship- not all dates turn into marriage, or ltr, or hot nights of sex. sometimes they end amicably or they end with a, "um lose that number, pal." and that's alright. those are just the babysteps you take and the things you learn that will help you out when you find a girl for you.

and it seems like you are the "nice guy" dont be fooled to thinking girls dont want a nice guy.. .they do. they just need to date some jerks in order to appreciate the nice guy. so dont change on that account. cuz you will eventually find a quality gal.
