Professional painters hate to paint with red. It takes forever to cover and many, many coats to look good.
They also tint the primer prior to using it (mix the red paint with the primer) and that helps eliminate a coat or two.
It took 4 coats to make the wall look right in my front room.
Good luck

Yep... red and yellow paint are the hardest colors to paint and also the most expensive as you need many coats to make it look nice. I'm pretty sure your primer was not tinted pink... you probrably used white primer. You can still get the red you want, but you'll need to keep putting on paint until it looks good. I've seen people have to put 5 and 6 coats...
There is one thing you can try. Get yourself a good one coat roller. They are a bit thicker than a normal roller and will hold more paint so the application is easier. Are you painting in straight lines up and down the wall? If so, stop right now. For the next coat of paint, make a huge letter N on the wall with the paint. Then go back to the beginning where the first vertical line of the N is and now go up and down. This should eliminate some of the lines you are seeing. What kind of paint are you using? Is it very liquid like Glidden paints? That doesn't help either. You might want to try having your color mixed in another company paint, like Sico.
So basically, you only have 3 options: Keep on putting more coats of paint (using the N technique and a one coat roller), stop putting the red on and use a pink primer before putting another coat of red or choose another color. Personally, I'd go with a coat or two more using the N technique etc.
Good luck... and keep in mind that once you've finished getting enough coats on, the red will look great and you'll love it,..

These people seem to know what they are talking about. Diva made some good points. I recently had to paint the red stripe at a Family Dollar. I primed in pink- to my surprise, it took twice the red to cover, even though I had the tint. Keep plugging away and it will cover. You may see stripes and lines because you don't keep enough paint in your roller. Keep a good 1/2 inch nap for interior walls.

When using reds and burgundy's prime the walls with grey primer first. Since you didnt prime with grey I suggest you start over before you end up with peeling paint from so many coats! Good luck

like they said, more coats. one thing to remember, make sure the paint has dried, at least a couple hours, before you re-coat. otherwise you are wasting your time, and it will still be streaky. next time, have the paint store tint the primer, and buy better paint. lowes and home depot suck. they have the worst paint. try http://www.benjaminmoore.com. you might pay a little more for the paint, but it is worth it in the long run.

unfortunately you have to apply more paint. red is indeed the hardest color to get good coverage with. but the results should make it worthwhile! hang in there sister.
